Opua is located in the Bay Of Islands, Northland, New Zealand. A 5 minute drive from Paihia, or 1 hr 30 minutes from Whangarei. If you are driving to Russell, you need to catch the Car Ferry from Opua.

Opua History
Opua, Bay of Islands is a seaside port town, and the Opua Marina is the first port of call for most leisure vessels arriving in New Zealand. The area was settled in the 1870s and a railway service operated directly from Opua to Auckland. The railway was discontinued in the 1980's but a leisure railway service is currently being restored by a private trust.
These days Opua, New Zealand has developed from a commercial port of old, to a modern leisure craft port with visitors and vessels from all around the world.
Opua Activities and Things to Do
Opua is a small area, yet there are many activities. There are bush walks along the coast, which afford great views. You can join a charter boat and enjoy day sailing in the Bay Of Islands. The Opua Sailing Club has waterfront dining on offer, and the Opua wharf has just been extended with new shops. Opua is a very relaxing place to enjoy.
