Russell is located in the Bay Of Islands, Northland, New Zealand. A short 30 minute passenger ferry ride across the water from the tourist hub Paihia and historical Waitangi. If you are travelling by car you need to catch the 10 minute Car Ferry from Opua.

Russell History
Russell is a sleepy seaside town, rich in early pioneer history. There are beautifully restored historic buildings at every turn. New Zealands Oldest Church and Oldest Police Station are within easy walking distance from each other.
The town has had a colourful history, and was extremely significant in the formation and growth of early New Zealand.
Russell Activities and Things to Do
Russell provides many things to do. For the curious, there are some of NZ's oldest historical buildings, and even a comprehensive Heritage Trail Walk. There are cafes and waterfront restaurants a plenty. For the active, there are many bush walks, several safe swimming beaches, boating activities, even Fishing Charters.
You can easily spend a day in Russell. Art, craft and souvenir shops will keep your senses engaged. You can walk the length of the town end to end in 5 minutes. All local points of interest are a maximum 5 minute car ride either way.
When you arrive in Russell go straight to the Visitors Centre located on Cass Street. If arriving by car the Visitor Centre is first building on the left. The visitor centre will provide you with more in-depth Russell Information. If arriving by passenger ferry exit the wharf and walk 100m to the right.
