There are two types of ferries operating in the Russell area:
- Car Ferry from Opua to Russell.
- Passenger Ferry from Paihia to Russell.
Car Ferry
If travelling by car to Russell you'll need to take the Car Ferry. The Car Ferry is located at Port Opua, just off the main highway. Turn left down the hill if driving from Paihia, or turn right down the hill if travelling up from Whangarei.
Car Ferry Times
The Russell Car Ferry runs every 20 minutes or so, from 7am - 9pm, 7 days a week. The journey only takes 10 minutes across the harbour. This is ample time to get out and stretch your legs!
You can embark and drive any vehicle right on to the ferry. $10 covers car and driver. Russell Car Ferry Passengers are $1.00. The Car Ferry is often referred to as the Opua Car Ferry, The Fullers Car Ferry and the Russell Car Ferry. You can read more a review on the Russell Car Ferry here.
Passenger Ferry
There are several Passenger Ferries operating from Paihia to Russell. The Bay Belle, The Waimarie and The Happy Ferry. You can jump on any of the ferries and they take the same route between Paihia and Russell. They all have similar prices too.
Passenger Ferry Times
If travelling on foot for a day in Romantic Russell then jump on the passenger ferry at Paihia wharf. Ferries leave both Paihia and Russell every 30 minutes or so, from 7am - 8pm, 7 days. In summer from October to May ferries run until 10pm.
